I forgot to call my Aunt on her birthday; I feel horrible about it. I'm sending her a really nice belated present to try and make up for it.

With very, very rare exceptions, I'd leave them off. Sometimes, even in work emails, you need to express a feeling, and a little face may be useful.

I do contact various people at corporate on a daily basis via e-mail. I find myself doing smilie faces when I'm trying to reply to something that they goofed on without sounding like a witch. Like accounting will ask me for a petty cash receipt when I just sent it and I reply 'already sent it' with a smile so I don't come off all mean.

If it's the district manager though I tend to go formal.

For individuals that I know well, like my boss directly above me and the people below me, I use them all the time. For group emails or people super high up that I don't know personally, I stay formal.

Inner office is fine, but I wouldn't send a smilie face to, say, the VP of my company. I personally don't use them at all, anywhere.

This is an interesting question because there are things that "Used to be illegal" in some ways. Anal sex by ANY couple(Gay or straight) was illegal,even Oral by ether gay or straight. Those were mainly in very conservative areas. It may still be illegal to rent to an unmarried couple living together in some places still. I think up until about 1960 it was against the law for mixed race marriages.

I think Utah might have some laws that need to be rescinded(perhaps other places as well) There are still some stupid laws on the books in many places.

Renting to unmarried couples.
