Re: Medusa's Quesion du jour (the year of the horse edition!)

I like my name as is. There are a couple amusing jokes I could make by changing my last name but explaining that means giving away my first name and....

we're talking about me, does anyone really expect me to provide my name on public boards?
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

    Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

Oh, sure...LOTS of people expect you to provide your name on public boards - Facebook, Yahoo!, Google...lots of news pages. Everyone expects you to trust *them* with your data...but I've met the nosepickers that are in charge of protecting it.

You can make a safe bet that MO hasn't once used his real name for any of that nonsense.

I'm not saying paranoid, though. Just more anonymous than most.

Except that, online, anonymity is much more of an illusion than people like to believe. I have gone so far as to say, around here even, that it's a myth. Anonymous doesn't exist online. It's just deception.

I have to agree Chain, there is what is called data mining, many do not really understand what this actually means. If one acquires enough bits of data about anyone that allows you to follow the path where it all leads, then it is possible to grab most any ones true Identity. The places where your data is acquired are many, those cards you use while you shop to get the sale prices, your phone records,I just began to notice that when I went to a site to check out tablets of a certain brand, then every site I went to after had an ad for this very same brand,so the sites know where I was and what I looked at.

I am to old to really be bothered by it,but still it made me just a little paranoid.

My mother wanted me to be named Uther, after Arthur's father. But the final name was Hector because Uther sounds like Uterus and my father didn't like it. I think Uther sounds cool, though.

                          Irrelevant, for two reasons.
                          1) It's the principle of the thing. I get that Medusa doesn't care - that's certainly her right. But me? I swore to defend and protect my Constitution - the same constitution that was written by (then) anonymous men in back alley bars. The same men that insisted on being able to speak their minds without the possibility of repurcussion in their "real working lives". Getting arrested for political speech is specifically what they were protecting us from. Don't worry though, The Feds hardly ever harrass people for being vocal about Freedom

                          2) The more difficult we make it for them, the better. As was mentioned, it's pretty easy for them to connect dots and find data points. But do you know what's easier? When I use the same username on my cell phone and my computer (for example) or on every website (for example). When I use my real name, or when I give some company permission to store my credit card information. You know what's great about making it "more difficult" for people to spy on you? Everything. Everything about it is awesome, because it makes douchbags have to work a bit harder to do douchy things. Anything (within reason, of course, I'm not advocating violence or anything like that) that I can do to make their job more difficult is a boost for Freedom. We could use more of that.

Very true. I wasn't trying to insinuate that it's a lost cause, trying to remain anonymous. Just pointing out that bit that Anu was saying about anonymity being a good thing, especially online, isn't as solid as many people appear to assume. You know, like privacy, 'unless you have your own server and restrict your activities to *just* that server, someone, somewhere, has access to it'. I mean, like emails, private messages, shit like that. In that vain, online anonymity has some pretty tough limits.

I think they're limits that we all need to push. Or at least some of us but, as I've said before, I couldn't care less about anonymity, in this regard. Someone wants to pop in, at my place, uninvited? Maybe steal my identity? Have at it, you know? In fact, as far as my credit history goes, if someone were to steal my identity they'd most likely improve it. And visitors? We don't ever get any here so an uninvited guest would be entertaining.

Nah, I've got other things that get way more priority over trying to improve online anonymity. Not that it's pointless.

Boy, tell me about it. And you'd be amazed at how much of a challenge it truley is. I host my own domains and email out of my house (now)...I'm nowhere near as secure as I want to be, and I still haven't worked out the details of making shit work the way I want them to. It's been a couple of years of off-and-on fiddling, and I actually know what I'm doing (most of the time).

Of course, part of my issue is that I'm learning quite a bit while I do it. It's nice that there are so many interfaces to help make it easy, but I'm finding that they clutter (and slow down) the system and at the same time you don't know how to fix it when it breaks. So I'm doing it the hard way.

Absolutely! We all fight the battles that we think are important...I realize that my particular battle is self-imposed and that most people don't see the point. But I do, and I'm the only one I can control.

I think at least from this last "bleeding heart"(did I get that wrong) is so everyone can now say its fixed when in reality its the ones "They"(the famous THEY) are not letting you in on. it has been speculated that the powers that be knew all about "bleeding heart...heart bleed..something heart" for years, and just kinda let it slip that they are on it. Perhaps to give false belief that you are now so secure you can stop being paranoid and just go back to the bliss of not knowing anything.
