IMHO - genetically modified food is as safe as non modified food, but, since it matters to some people, labeling provides information that is meaningful.

However, as long as the law does not forbid the labeling of non modified food, all this does is create a niche market for interested entrepreneurs.

Personally, I think that most pro-label activists want to use GMO labeling as a first step to banning GMOs. Plus, I think that the only label anti-GMO activists will be happy with is the equivalent of a skull and crossbones, or those warnings on cigarette boxes.

This law will also apply to revealing where food comes from. Myself I prefer to know what is what and have a choice of what I purchase.

I saw a video today about people in Haiti making cookies out of dirt. It's really sad. Yet, we see fit to poison/tinker with the food supply. Senseless.

This is just my opinion, I don't want to start a heated debate, but a lot of times food will be genetically modified in order to be protected from pesticides. I would want these labels on my food so I know which ones are more likely to have certain pesticides, so I can avoid them.
