Okay, apologies for derailing the thread. Father Ted was indeed a brilliant series. But I still have a very soft spot for Rab C Nesbitt...

      Re: Opinion Debate

I think keep your opinions as your opinions and don't say they're facts. Everyone has an opinion and that's fine. Just don't state your opinion and claim it as a fact in the middle of the debate.

Yes, opinions are not facts. I get frustrated with some religious types who muddle the two things up, I suppose they believe something so strongly it becomes like a fact to them?

Sometimes opinions are facts... but mostly they are just emotional connections to a scap of data that supports our emotional connection to a topic.

Debates require facts to back up opinions, otherwise its just an argument.

So is this thread an opinion on Debates or a debate on Opinions?

This. Also I think a civilian has no right of expressing their opinion if it threatens the safety of their country.

Can you give an example of this? I'm failing to understand your point.

Sure. For example, a civilian here in Israel mustn't upload the adress of military bases, storage of weapons or any kind of gov documents to the media. Same goes for military or government different plans. Because an enemy country can get access to this info. Same goes to the war between China and Japan or Russia and Georgia, for instance.

                          Standard everywhere - national secrets...
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

But it did seem to imply that saying anything "Might" seem less than following the national party line,as in saying you are against a war. Different than exposing national secrets BUT should not be considered an aspect of being disloyal. I do not like the idea of war,and more so a war based on lies an deceit. This BTW makes many people distrust their own leaders if they find their leaders lied to push for an unneeded war. I think this may be the root of the problem we face now where many distrust ANY authority, local, state or Federal.
Here in the US we do have the right to question things.

                                Re: Opinion Debate

Technically, if a random US citizen comes across a government secret then they can blab all they want about it. The catch is that the people who are actually entrusted with government secrets don't have that freedom and most ways to get government secrets without being specifically entrusted with them involve someone breaking the law.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

                                Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."
