What I saw I like and think it looked very good. Curious though if you forged the steel for the blades did you use cold forge or hot forge to mold the steel? The blades I could see didn't seem beaten cold but I could be wrong. The shields were very nice as well, especially the decorated ones and the imagery on them.

I see you have some carved bone in there...which is something I am thinking about trying. Do you use green or cured bone? Do you soak it and carve wet or dry? Do you use a respirator?

My hubby is very insistent I get one, and I plan to...I'm just not sure what level of protection I need. I do also plan to do all carving outside.

swords...sprung steel, hot forged then hollow ground to get the fuller.

shields...the battle shield in pine of 9 boards has since been trashed..the decorated ceremonial in 3 lime boards is still the same... the bosses are beaten into shape and not spun - same with the helmet

bone....I tend to use the bleached dog chew type...called a calcium bone over here..gives a nice white finish and I think a bit more hygenic

soaking in warm water is definitely easier as it makes the very top surface turn to the consistancy of cheese....filing as well as carving

have never used a respirator in my life....although a face mask is useful when cutting the original plate out of the whole bone (More so when working in antler)

That's what I thought too, but the husband thought that soaking would make it impossible. Do you use a dremel or hand tools?

Do you just soak in water or do you use any additives?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a painter and a lot of bone carvers are really close lipped about their processes.

                  Re: hobbies

when you start if you run into problems ask - ok...no such thing as a stupid question

                  no chemicals...

everything starts by deciding what you want to make and cutting the rough blank from the bone - held in a vice - with a hacksaw

the blank is shaped using hand files of various sizes...but not coarse grained ones as they tend to mark

once the shape is achieved then the time for decoration arrives...I do this by marking with pencil and using fine files scratch the pattern into the surface...then this can be soaked and "cut out" with small woodcarving chsels, points and the like..carve wet and file dry

to get the final finish I have found that wet and dry gives a nice smooth top finish

i then save hours by buffing with T-cut....to emphasise the pattern either black wax or as some use an indelible pen give good results

                  helpful ??

This is sort of what I'm planning on trying. Though I have some straight bones I may try to make wands/mini totems out of first as practice. I have a lot of cow and deer skulls available to work with.

thats a beautiful carving...i'd start with something simple for practice though - get the techniques first

meant to say before...have never had any luck with power tools i found they cut too much, too fast and produced a lot of dust.....but you may have better luck with them

Other than files, what hand tools do you use? Like an awl (which would make sense then with the wet vs dry business)? I wonder if a dental tool would work....

truth be told...as with most others that I have met...I'll use anything that seems to do the job, awls, penknife, braddle, files, small wood chisels, broken hacksaw blades..i've probably used them all.......

dental tools would be a good idea...picks and scrapers...must have a looksie for some - if we can get them over here that is

Thanks for the help. I think I'm going to the hobby shop tonight! If I use the wet method, I can skip the respirator, to get started anyway.

If you are making dust at all, or worried about particulates, you can use an N-95. Also, you could consider hooking up a vac or shop-vac to the area where you are working to draw and capture particulates away from you--some sanders and things (for the woodworking peeps) have an attachment for this sort of thing already.
