    Re: Columbus Day

A Euro-Pagan??? As opposed to...? I mean, I'm indigenous to Wales if that's any help. If however you mean one of the First Nations then please say so, just to avoid any confusion. I mean, 'We traditional people...' might be a bit vague. After all we're all traditional people up to a point.

But, to set the record straight, I don't think about Columbus day unless or until someone brings it up. And I can well understand why some people get so het and spewed up about it. I would, myself, if I felt on the receiving end of it.

I hate it. I hate that people are celebrating the beginning of a bloodbath, it makes me sick.

As a dual North American/German, I get it. It's basically saying that Columbus Day celebrates something that was a massacre and that remembering the effects of colonization should be a solemn affair, not a national holiday. Much like having a Holocaust Day in Germany would be a pretty tasteless thing to do.

I know that you know this, but I just thought I'd draw the comparison a little more directly. I think it's getting lost. People in Europe don't really learn the history of North America to such a large extent.

I agree with him on almost everything except Scottish Independence, so naturally I loved this!

TBH, being Native American doesn't guarantee an opinion against it either. I have a best friend that is Cherokee and Cree, a cousin (by marriage) that is Navajo, and both of them consider it so far down on their radar of things to even care about as to be a non-issue. Now, the Redskins not changing their name, that pisses both of them off (and I'm totally down with that), but "protesting bad history with more bad history is just bad form" to quote my bestie.

Also, both of them celebrate any number of Christian holidays, one of them being Catholic, and the other having children that are Mormon.

I'd have to think that they should be VERY sorry for releasing Men At Work upon the world.

Traditional indigenous people of the western hemisphere.

Too bad it's only upon threads like this that people will even converse with us here at such places.
