        Re: Columbus Day

It provides lots of people who aren't retail employees with a 3-day holiday in which to f with my weekend. Burn it.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

        Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

          Re: Columbus Day

Apparently Columbus day is "Indigenous People's Day" in Seattle now. My opinion is exactly the same about that as it is Columbus day: it's a day off, other than that I don't care.

Holidays only really matter outside of whether it's a day off or not, when they're an excuse to do something fun. Like dress up and eat candy, eat seasonal food, or drink in excess. Unless you are into the whole religious observance stuff.
Trust is knowing someone or something well enough to have a good idea of their motivations and character, for good or for ill. People often say trust when they mean faith.

Who says that every holiday is a religious holiday?

And whether you believe it or not - I usually really care what a holiday is all about.

            Yes, I do.

I am that old fashioned .....

I think there is more to life than only thinking in terms of: "Do I have a personal materialstic advantage from this or that - or not?"

Well, that's my opinion on it, I'm not a very fanciful sort of guy.

                  Re: Columbus Day

From my own personal experience, Columbus Day isn't even really "celebrated" anywhere in America. Only some areas have schools that have it off, and only certain businesses will close there doors to "observe" this as a holiday.

I work for the State of California, where they LOVE to "observe" any holiday just to have another 3-day weekend added to the list. We don't get Columbus day off. Neither did the schools within the district that I live in. I obviously can't speak to the rest of the country, but around these parts, we see it as another day.

It's a very big deal in NYC & vicinity, and for many people of Italian heritage.

Turns out Sorry Day has been going on since 97. Apparently Howard put it in, instead of saying sorry (what the...).

Don't get a day off for it though.

Sorry day seems something more of a Canadian holiday. No?

                            It should be

If it were, it would be more of a sorry for everything ever day, though.

                            Sorry....
