Right now I'm reading The Conquest Of America by Tzvetan Todorov and Subjects of The Sultan by Suraya Faroqhi.

      A Harry Potter fanfiction.

I'm not even ashamed. This is really well done.

Why should you be ashamed? I'm 31 and I still write fanfiction.

I'm 33 and so do I, in fact I didn't start to write until two years ago.

Come to think of it fanfiction is just about all I read these days too. Much better quality than most "original" fiction I come across.

I totally agree with you Yorin. There are some bad fanfics out there. Some people don't even care to look at their grammar. I can't stand that.

Have you read Twilight? It's published and its garbage.

There's really bad and really good writing everywhere.

Thank you Rowan . I was going to make a similar point, though I intended to use 50 Shades as example instead. Good writing and bad writing can be found in any type of fiction.

True but if you're into one of the larger fandoms, you should find some good stuff. Potter is one of the largest out there, it gets a number of decent fics just out of sheer numbers.

Of course, it also gets an insane amount of utter drek but numbers are a double-edged blade.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

Oh never said there wasn't. There's just this wonderful article (or this one) that highlights some of the stuff that I keep coming across which gives fanfiction in general a bad rap. You'll always find good and bad, just.....certain people in fanfiction scare me lol.

Finally finished up King of Plagues. Whew, a long one. But so fun and fast paced. Now on to Jonathan Maberry's Extinction Machine. It's about ufo technology (I think) and its military applications.

Extinction Machine lost me half way through. Meh. Not into ufos. So I picked up Chuck Hogan's Blood Artists. Amazing biological mystery story. It's quick too. I took it with me to the lake. Finished it up before work today.

I'm in the middle of My Notorious Life and it's incredible. I can't recommend it enough.

(I just finished The Twin's Daughter and didn't care much for it.)

I finished reading The Battle of the Tanks by Lloyd Clark. It was a really good book on the battle of Kursk, mainly focusing on tank battles between the Germans and Russians in WWII. I'm now reading The Making of the Atomic Bomb.
